First time at BA
When talking about American death/doom of the nineties, names like Incantation or Autopsy are a given. But deep in the undergrowth of Wisconsin in 1993, something was born that was way ahead of its time in terms of weight and atmosphere. Dusk. A band that, on their 1994 self-titled album, defined the sound of absolute hopelessness interspersed with crushing riffs. After a long hibernation, they are back, and their presence at Brutal is a dream come true for anyone who worships the era when metal wasn't in a hurry, but hurt all the more.
Dusk aren't about technical wankery. They are about the rotting texture of sound and the vocals of Steve Childers (R.I.P.), whose legacy the band continues in its current reincarnation. Their comeback album Dysphoria showed they haven't lost any of their ability to build monumental walls of noise that pin you to the ground. It's music for people who enjoy slow tempos but demand the intensity of a jackhammer. In the Fortress, we can expect a lesson in genre history that won't be about nostalgia, but about the pure power of minimalism and darkness that gets under your skin.
