The Tyrolean slopes are cold, harsh, and unforgiving. It is from these mystical, fog-shrouded Alpine peaks that PERCHTA emerges—a music project that uncompromisingly merges the raw aggression of black metal with ritualistic folklore and Alpine mythology. Founded in 2017 in Tyrol, the band takes its name from the pagan entity or goddess (akin to the Germanic Frigg or Frau Holle) who embodies both light and darkness, radiant purity and terrifying natural force. That exact duality fuels their sound.
Following their critically acclaimed debut album Ufång (2020), which redefined neo-folk black metal through the use of the local Tyrolean dialect, PERCHTA returns with their sophomore full-length D'Muata ("The Mother"). The record serves as an uncompromising feminist manifesto set within an extreme metal framework. While femininity in all its facets and cycles remains a niche topic in black metal, under the leadership of mastermind and vocalist Frau Percht, it gains a vital, deeply organic dimension.
Musically, PERCHTA relies on a tempest of tremolo guitars, bone-piercing extreme vocals that shift seamlessly into captivating spoken word and traditional folk singing, and authentic folk instrumentation. Rather than using traditional elements as mere background gimmickry, the folk instrumentation forms the very backbone of their ritualistic atmosphere.
