The turn of the millennium belonged to Swedish death metal, but while most of the Gothenburg scene was softening its edge with melodic hooks and keyboards, Defleshed took the exact opposite route. The trio—fronted by bassist/vocalist Gustaf Jorde, guitarist Lars Lofvén, and drumming powerhouse Matte Modin (also known for his work in Dark Funeral)—delivered an uncompromising fusion of thrash and death metal at absolute supersonic speeds. No filler, no atmospheric intros, just pure sonic butchery. Albums like Under the Blade (1997) and Fast Forward (1999) defined the standard for Swedish thrash/death: machine-gun tempos, that signature gritty Swedish guitar tone, and vocal delivery that leaves zero room to catch your breath.
Following the release of Reclaim the Beat in 2005, the band went on a seventeen-year hiatus. However, their 2022 comeback record Grind Over Matter proved that time off hadn't dulled their surgical precision one bit. Defleshed sound just as hungry and abrasive today as they did in the late nineties. Tracks like "Heavy Metal Massacre" or "Bent Out of Shape" rely on straightforward riffs backed by the force of a steamroller and drumming that shows no mercy from start to finish.
