The British surgical unit from Liverpool. A band that, over its more than 35-year career, created two new chapters in the history of extreme music. When Bill Steer, Jeff Walker, and back then Ken Owen first blended ruthless grindcore with clinical pathology in the second half of the 1980s on the albums Reek of Putrefaction (1988) and Symphonies of Sickness (1989), they gave birth to goregrind. The filthy, overdriven sound, sewer-like vocals, and lyrics ripped straight from medical textbooks may have shocked critics, but they instantly sparked a cult following among underground enthusiasts.
However, Carcass were never content with being stuck in a single genre box. The arrival of guitar virtuoso Michael Amott acted as a detonator for an evolution the scene was simply unprepared for. The album Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious (1991) brought complex guitar structures and technical precision, only for the subsequent masterpiece Heartwork (1993) to shatter all rules and inject pure melody directly into the veins of extreme metal. With this, Carcass effectively defined the template for melodic death metal. The perfect symbiosis between Bill Steer’s razor-sharp riffs, anthemic melodies, and Jeff Walker’s ironic, cynical phrasing remains an unsurpassed benchmark to this day.
