If you look it up in medical textbooks, you’ll find that vulvodynia is a chronic and persistent vaginal pain of unknown origin. What the medical guides won’t tell you is that VULVODYNIA is also the name of a South African outfit that has been contributing to the revival of slamming death metal within the elite of extreme guitar-driven subgenres since 2014. Hailing from the South African city of Durban, the band has stated from the beginning that their goal was to create “the most brutal and hardest metal ever to come out of Africa.”
Their music operates at the intersection of brutal death metal, slam, and deathcore — featuring brutal breakdowns, filthy riffs, and heavy, violent vocals. Vulvodynia quickly gained international attention — from their very first EPs and singles, they proved that they are not “just another band,” but a force delivering a dark, violent, and raw form of extreme metal with a distinct identity.
