Denmark's Afsky, driven solely by mastermind Ole Luk, represents one of the most compelling forces in modern depressive atmospheric black metal. Since its inception in 2015, the project has evolved from an intimate solo endeavor into a globally revered act. The major turning point arrived with Ofte jeg drømmer mig død (2020), an album rooted in 19th and 20th-century Danish poetry exploring themes of poverty, grueling rural labor, and the bleak fate of the working class.
Musically, Afsky fuses raw black metal speed with acoustic passages and sharp, deeply resonant melodies. A defining characteristic is Luk's raw, desperate vocal delivery. Tracks like Tynde Knogler and Udvandringen demonstrate a knack for constructing hypnotic, icy soundscapes—a trajectory pushed even further on their latest release, Om hundrede år (2023). Live, the studio project transforms into a full-fledged band delivering intense sonic pressure and an uncompromising atmosphere.
