WARDRUNA

Country: Norway
Genre: DARK FOLK

Wardruna, the Norwegian project led by Einar Selvik, was founded in 2003 with the aim of reviving ancient Norse spiritual and musical traditions through modern means. Instead of electric guitars and drums typical of black metal — from which Wardruna partly draws its ideological roots — the group employs archaic instruments such as the tagelharpa, kravik lyre, deer-hide drums, and bronze horns. Their music fuses ambient, neofolk, and ritualistic elements into a deeply atmospheric whole that feels more like a mystical experience than a conventional song. The lyrics draw from runic poetry, Norse mythology, and nature, emphasizing rhythm, breath, and the resonance of space — every sound carries both symbolic and spiritual weight.

Wardruna holds a crucial place in the spiritual and aesthetic evolution of the Norwegian black metal ethos. While early black metal bands like Burzum and Ulver had already experimented with ambient textures and pagan themes, Wardruna transformed these influences into a form of authentic ritual art, free from aggression or provocation. In doing so, the project became a bridge between extreme metal and the broader Scandinavian cultural renaissance — inspiring not only the metal community but also popular culture (notably through the Vikings soundtrack). Wardruna demonstrates that darkness and spirituality can exist outside the boundaries of metal aesthetics while still resonating deeply with its essence.
