Malignancy is an East Coast extreme metal group with a lethal yet infectious sound rooted in the kinetic blast beats and unorthodox songwriting typical of New York technical death metal. Early works like "Intrauterine Cannibalism" (1998) leaned heavily into grindcore, while later efforts such as "Inhuman Grotesqueries" (2007) and "Discontinued" (2024) took a broader, more technically ambitious approach to the genre.
Malignancy was founded in Yonkers in 1992 by vocalist Danny Nelson and guitarist Javier Velez, demonstrating remarkable resilience amidst frequent lineup changes. Despite these challenges, Nelson and Ron Kachnic, who replaced Velez in 1994, remain the band's sole constant members. After releasing three demos, the band secured a record deal in 1998 and dropped their debut full-length album, "Intrauterine Cannibalism", the following year—delivering a pummeling take on brutal death metal in the vein of Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation. The compilation "Ignorance Is Bliss", featuring their early demos, arrived in 2001, followed by the "Cross Species Transmutation" EP in 2003. Further notable releases include "Eugenics" (2012), a dystopian concept album exploring the evolution and devolution of a fictional future society, and their latest album "Discontinued" (2024), an intricate display of technical brutality infused with post-apocalyptic themes.
