I'm a girl from Canada, 22yo, tall, slim, long blond hair. Im came to the Brutal this year alone, without any boys to make me safe like you warned in your post.

I think you paranoid quite a lot! I haven't been scared at all during the 3 days I spent at the Brutal and the other days in Czech Republic. I never had any trouble, guys were nice. Never felt followed or anything, didnt see any violence, etc.

So dont generalize too quickly! I dont think that girls going alone should be afraid! Its a great place, there's a lot of people and you should really bad lucky for something bad to happen.

To freya.

How would I feel if you called all New Yorkers arrogant, unfriendly arseholes with a god complex? I'd say you're practically on the dot about New Yorkers in general. I dislike people here for the most part and they're mainly back stabbers. If you're not tough, you WILL get eaten alive here. I recognize bullshit on the spot and I know when I'm in a sketchy area too. I never had that impression at Norway Rock, Sweden Rock, Hole In the Sky, Wacken Open Air and Hellfest in France. Guess what? They are in more advanced, developed nations than most Eastern European countries. Here's another news flash, robbery was barely, if ever an issue at these events. Now another thing is that the camp sites are more secured as well. As a NYer, I know when I see suspicious shit going on and I saw enough of that at BA. Now I didn't have a terrible time, I wasn't robbed because I was smart. We stayed in our car in a 24 hr guarded lot. We brought all our food from the Penny Market and kept it in the trunk. So we were always close. Listen up, Czech Rep, especially any area outside of Prague or Plzen is underdeveloped and the people are perhaps struggling more than usual. At least compared to European nations on the western half. So theft is gonna happen. Listen, I understand if you're offended, but it's the truth. OK? If you say Americans are arrogant, well you're not too far off the mark on that one. I wrote a post on the things you need to look out for at the BA festival and I see all the pussies got worked up because I criticized their “precious” festival. Why does it have attendees? Because it's dirt cheap! 60 euros for a 3 day festival? Shoot, even I was tempted to give it a try. If you charge tickets for BA the same EXACT price as Hellfest or Wacken, I assure you NO ONE will go. Now the diehard will deny that to in a show of solidarity against me. But for the same price ticket I would go to those aforementioned fests any time over BA. Listen, you guys can go all you want. Did you think everyone was going to love your festival? NO! So why act surprised when someone merely states the truth about a festival and also the truth of why that festival is perhaps the most sketchy of all European festivals? So, go ahead, attend the festival, you can go on and remember what I said beforehand. As a guy who knows bullshit here in NYC, and there's alot of it here. I know when I see it. This place isn't as glamourous as you see in the movies. It's a rough place and you have to look out for yourself. But if you're a tourist staying in a hotel in the city for a few days you may not understand that. Try living here for 35 years.

to pinhead.

Nope, it doesn't suck to be me at all. I go to Wacken, Hellfest and Maryland Deathfest all in the same year on my hard earned money. And I have a beautiful wife. So I'm quite happy where I am. BA while they have good bands that attend, is a very flawed festival. They need to put the campsite behind a fence where's there's guards at the entrance. Not just anywhere around the fucking town. Any Joe can just walk in and take your shit without batting an eye. Plus, they need more guards, more people who speak English and more beer stands. Fights broke out because the kegs were out and people were waiting for at least 50 minutes for WARM BEER. Yeah, it's a poorly run festival. But hey, you losers get Gorgoroth or Napalm Death at BA and it's all good right? Try going to a real festival if you cocksuckers can afford it and see what a real festival should be like. Now go critisize me because I only stated THE TRUTH about an average festival at best. I went to see what it's all about and I see it's not much. So I won't go back. Doesn't mean you don't have to go either. I just simply stated the facts and things you should look out for. If you're bothered by that too bad. I dont care about what you think. So those people who weren't sure, but needed some advice, I gave it to you. If you get robbed or beat up, don't say I didn't warn you. As for you fuckers who take a music festival criticism so personally you can suck it. I don't care about you anyway. I'll be more than happy to see the countless bands that come to NYC anyway. So I'm happy with that. Cheers!

Hey tompo. If you don't like what I had to say, tough shit! I just said the truth. If you don't like it, fuck off. I said what I thought. Too bad if I touched your nerve. But its the truth. Also, NY hardcore kids would never go to BA since it's so obscure so I know you're lying about that. If your sorry ass gets robbed then it served you right you little piece of shit. I've been to many festivals and by far BA is the most poorly organized one of all. There's good bands, but that's where it all ends. You have people from poor countries attending you're gonna have more robberies than usual. Is this rocket science? No! It's a fact. Criticism is a part of life and if you can't handle the truth you shouldn't be here. So go back to the cave you came from and go fuck yourself punk. Have a nice day!

Red_Bull_Vettel

I think someone needs to remove the stick which is quite clearly up your arse and beat you over the head with it. The only time I saw any trouble brewing seemed to be when the NY hardcore kids were kicking off, mind you I steered well clear of that anyway because the music offends my ears. If you find the country backward, the festival badly run and its audience threatening then I suggest you stay in NYC, I think everyone would be a lot happier for it.

Freya said 13/12/2010 11:56

Perhaps you don't mean to, but you're coming across as xenphobic. Eastern Europe may not have the socioeconomic climate you're used to, but it's a bit harsh to assume that someone is out to rob you, just because they're not as well off as you.

I've been to Eastern Europe 4 times (3 times as a single woman), and have never felt threatened. All the locals I met have been nothing less than friendly and welcoming.

I am sorry that you seem to have had a bad experience, but it is not fair to tarnish a nation with the same brush just because you didn't have a good time. How would you feel if I called all New Yorkers arrogant, unfriendly arseholes with a god complex?
Red_Bull_Vettel said 13/12/2010 09:09

Aussie

I'm not fearful, but I'm not stupid either. I live in a place that would make anyone scared. So I have a good idea of sketchy characters. Nothing happened to us, because we were smart and avoided any confrontations and knew how to not get robbed. First off, I've been to many festivals and none were as worrying as BA. I hate to say that in this forum, but it's true. I've been to Wacken, Maryland Deathfest, Norway Rock, Hole In the Sky, Hellfest and Sweden Rock. So I have experience in that. All those places had a safe, festive atmosphere. Everyone was happy go lucky. Not once did I feel that the situation in those places ever got sketchy. But then again, I went to festivals where they are held in more advanced countries economically speaking. So when you go to a dive like Jaromer, you're gonna get more robberies than the aforementioned places. I chose to check it out, while it's not a war zone I do think the other festivals are better located and much safer. I have a Polish friend who agrees with me despite having gone to BA for 6-7 yrs in a row now. He's been to Sweden Rock and he agreed with me on this. So hey, if you feel safe and can make friends on the spot without getting robbed on location, good for you. We weren't, but we didn't camp out either. Besides, the weather was bad with that terrible thunderstorm with heavy heavy showers. The place was one huge mud pit. Listen, I'm not telling others not to go, go ahead. Just take my advice from my post and I assure you, you will be fine. But most of all, don't be trusting. I know Aussies don't understand that, but in these countries you gotta watch your back. This isn't Denmark or Australia where people are different as a whole. Czech Rep is a poor country and its more likely you can get robbed. And to those who got offended, well sorry, but it had to be said.
Aussie said 12/12/2010 01:23

it is most unfortunate that you had such a fearful time. i have been to BA 12 , 14 and 15, without incident. they all have been fantastic , in fact!
you bad report of your festival experience, based on misconcieved fear , is unfounded.
fair enough , the unsecured camping may be a gamble , but if you took the time to meet your camping neighbors (instead of being fearful)you might meet some great people who dont want to be robbed either. everyone keeps a loose eye on each others camps , therefore reducing the risk of robbers.
as for violence, i have not yet seen any.
Red_Bull_Vettel said 09/12/2010 10:22

About robberies.

To Scucca and others about the robberies. I went with my wife in the car since she's Polish and not far from Jaromer, about 4 hrs. We scoped out the place and personally I don't think it's very safe, especially having a woman around, Mainly because these guys can get violent when drunk. First off, don't dress up by any means. That will certainly be a red light. You might as well carry a sign saying “I've got money!”.

We didn't do that, we live in NYC and we are perhaps the most street smart people on earth! We didn't attract attention. But the campsite is not well looked after by guards or personnel. So if you leave it, you're gambling BIG TIME. I would suggest a nearby hostel and book now, (December or January). Trust me on that one. We stayed in a VIP parking lot and slept in the car instead. At least it's guarded 24 hours and it's cheap too. Plus you have the benefit of locking your car too. Unlike tents.

Compared to Wacken, it's like day and night. Wacken felt safe, the location was nicer and the atmosphere was more festive, friendlier in my opinion. At BA you felt intimidated because the people were loud, on the verge of violence and you didn't see much security lurking outside the main entrance. You didn't want to get in the way of these people. Almost “hooligan” like.

Now maybe I exaggerate, but better to be alert and aware than unassuming and trusting. Remember, Czech Rep. is not as advanced, developed or as wealthy a country as Germany (Wacken) so the people that show up tend to be from Czech Rep, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, etc and other nearby countries (mainly Slavic). Basically people who can't afford Wacken tickets and the trip to Germany. So naturally these people have a tendency to rob. I don't want to offend or generalize, but let's not be stupid. Keep your eyes open and study your surroundings.

Wacken had a much safer atmosphere, more happy go lucky behavior from the fans, in and around the main entrance. You had the feeling that it (Wacken) was a professionally run event. BA has been around for what 15 years? I still felt that it needed MUCH more security presence outside the entrance. The area is smaller since it's inside the town of Jaromer, or Josefov to be precise, and somewhat crammed in. Unless it's a band I would die for, we're not going back. Besides, Wacken is really THE festival to attend and we live in NYC, so bands come here all the time. But my BA curiousity is fulfilled and that's the end of it.

Recap, if you're going, STAY in a hostel, dress up in military clothing since they won't think you have money, it's cool looking, and it's intimidating. Nobody looks to go after people dressed like that unless you're trying to provoke someone. Best suggestion, black shirt and military cargo pants. You'll blend in and nobody will notice you. Even better, if you're a girl, wear all this and a baseball cap to hide your long hair and your face especially if you're a hot chick. The drunks won't notice you and try to be aggressive with you, especially if you're alone. Nothing happened to us fortunately, but we kinda knew what to deal with. Us New Yorkers know how to deal with bullshit and bad people on a daily basis. So take my advice and I assure you, you will be fine. If you're a girl, bring male friends, at least one. Preferably 2-3.

VIP camping

Any news on the VIP camping?
Scucca said 15/07/2009 14:43

:S

All this talk of the robberies is really putting me off going. But I've already booked the flights and bought my ticket.
I'm flying over from Ireland for this festival with a friend and I'd like to know that my stuff is safe. Otherwise I dunno about it. I wouldn't like to end up in a hostel since camping is a huge part of the fun of festivals and to stay in a hostel would take away from the festival atmosphere.
warlockuk said 05/07/2009 11:00

Hmmm..

I've been lucky enough not to experience thievery at Wacken any of the seven times I've been, but I generally keep my valuables etc with me.

The thing I don't like the idea of is not being safe when I'm sleeping. That, and having an argument with a robber when I only speak a little Czech and I'm naked :D

That said, I'd take a robbing for Atheist; but it isn't just my safety I have to think of. :)
CrushFucker said 04/07/2009 01:14

warlockuk

I was twice at Wacken and once at BA. I'd say the level of thievery is not so much different at both fests (OK, at BA it's probably little bit higher). Just don't leave valuables unattended and keep your wallet/mobile etc inside sleeping bag while sleeping and you'll be OK.
warlockuk said 04/07/2009 00:41

Hmmm

I was thinking of going this year (mid-way through working out how to get there from the UK the day after I get back from Wacken) but if I'm going to be robbed in my tent I have to think about my girlfriend's safety as well as the safety of my belongings…

I'll keep reading to see what this secure/vip camping is but at the moment it's too risky to go somewhere with a high chance of getting robbed as I sleep :(

How can I book this VIP camp?
Shindy said 24/06/2009 15:28

Matty

I guess I have good news concerning the camping site security thing. there will be a VIP camp, guarded 24 hours a day with access only for those who will have a speacial wrist band. so noone other can access this VIP camp. I have no more details to tell right now, please give us a few days to fix the details and we will be announcing a complete package of information on this topic. price for this VIP camp should be approx. 17 EUR for the whole festival per one person.

beside the VIP camp there will be camping possibilities around . unfortunately due to buildings and roads leading around it would be illegal to keep these roads for the festival visitors only.

last but not least, there will be cloak room or depository room, however you call it, where you can leave your valuable belongings. the price will be 50 euro cents per one item and you can put something in or out 3 times of your e.g. bag while at the depository.
Matty said 24/06/2009 14:20

Robberies and attendance

What's the situation this year regarding the campsite? Is it going to be open for access only for people actually camping there or can anyone who fancies have a wander round?

Also will there be any facilities for storing valuables such as passports , money , phones , etc. We are thinking of coming from the UK as the line-up looks fucking awesome but I must admit we are slightly put off by the reports of robberies.

Lastly , what kind of attendance are you expecting this year and how many turned up last year?

Cheers

Matty
